Greer, South Carolina Farmers Market Opens

    May 13, 2016

Greer Farmer’s Market Edibles Greer, South Carolina has opened their annual farmer’s market before most others in the Upstate.  Approximately 20 vendors were available.  Meat, seafood, micro greens, artisan bread, herbs and homemade products were set up and ready to sell.   The rain held off for the opening day of farmer’s market season.  Although premium vegetables were not quite ready for picking (May 5th), several vendors had new product ideas. Steven Reid was selling his original Humble Roots spreadable pimento cheese.  In 8 oz containers, his creation is delicious and very cheesy. Inspired by his grandmother, he has developed an excellent product, delicious on Ritz crackers.  Available in smoked…

Simple Supper: One Pot Pasta with Spinach & Tomatoes

    May 12, 2016

Easy pasta dinner with a few ingredients… My favorite go to meal when I have no idea what to make for dinner is PASTA.  It is so easy to prepare and you only need a few ingredients to boost it up to an entree.  Served with a slice of bread, this is a meal that was a crunch time touchdown that only took about 30 minutes from start to finish. Ingredients needed: 1 Tablespoon of Olive Oil 1 cup of chopped onion 6 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 1 (14.5 ounce) can petite diced tomatoes – do not drain them 1 1/2 cups chicken stock – I use Swanson, unsalted…

Using Natural Habitat Gardens at Ford Elementary School

    May 3, 2016

Natural habitats are a necessity Natural habitats and gardens are vital to our plant’s ecosystem.  With the vast development of land throughout our region, wildlife has become displaced.  Creating natural habitats in your backyard garden can preserve necessary wildlife to sustain our environmental balance.  Ford Elementary School in Acworth, Georgia is one of the premier schools to successful develop a natural habitat and use it to educate students outside the classroom. Ford Elementary School Earth Plant Program Founder and teacher Catherine Padgett says the program’s first goal, “is to bring awareness of environmental issues such as habitats, pollution, and conservation of resources to the classroom by using Ford’s outdoor classrooms.” …

Stoney River Legendary Steaks – Review

    April 29, 2016

Pleasurable dining experience at Stoney River of Atlanta Always looking for a good steak, this cuisine critique takes us to an exclusive, upscale steak house, Stoney River Legendary Steaks. Although, they have locations in six cities throughout the country, their motto is “a collection, not a chain.”  From the moment you enter the restaurant, patrons realize, this is not just an evening out for dinner, it is an elegant sanctuary. Their menu can vary from city to city; however all locations offer pasta, fish, soups, salads and of course, signature steaks.  The appetizer list is very diverse with something for everyone.  Delicate desserts paired with a great espresso are the…

    Garden Planted

    April 26, 2016

It is after April 15 and the danger of frost has passed so I FINALLY PLANTED MY GARDEN.  Crook neck yellow squash & goldy zucchini Of course, there is always a chance of a freak frost, but doubtful.  As noted in a previous blog post http://joannsfoodbites.com/foodie-bites/top-5-prepping-for-your-herb-garden/  I have already prepped my planters.  I had to change my game plan so, I have tried something new.  I planted my two squash plants and one zucchini in an old wheelbarrow.  The wheelbarrow has a huge gash in the bottom, to provide adequate drainage for my plants. I used a high quality potting soil and will watch them closely. I am also trying…
