We have all been told by doctors, scientist and researchers, the key to healthily living is diet and exercise. But recent research suggests exercise, not necessarily intensive exercise and eliminating processed foods can increase your life by 7 years! Burlington, North Carolina Approves Produce Stands
As an avid supporter of sustainable living, I try to frequent my local Travelers Rest Farmer’s Market to buy locally grown vegetables and products made by other local residents. This not only helps the local community but also provides a healthier meal plan for my family. Burlington, North Carolina has realized these benefits and has agreed to amend their ordinance for residential produce markets. Under the previous ordinance, plants, fruits and vegetables could only be sold in a residential area if the crops were physically grown on the same property. Former City Manager Harold Owen says is just not realistic given the city’s population density. He knew changing the ordinance…

Senate Nullifies Vermont GMO Labeling Law

This “sham” legislation will allow some products to go completely unlabeled due to a definition of “bioengineered food” that even the FDA has called in to question. Companies will be permitted to use “QR” codes that will be unreadable by Americans without smartphones. Beyond all of…

Senate Considering GMO Food Labeling Legislation
Are you concerned about what is in your food? I care about what kind of food I am eating and what makes up this food. As a grandmother, I am more concerned about the food my granddaughter is eating. Consumers, myself included, have allowed the federal and state governments to assume the role of regulator. Why have I done this? Why do we continue to allow our government to decide which foods are good for us and which are harmful if consumed? We (Americans) assume the items we purchase at the grocery store are safe to consume and do not incur negative affects on our health. Therefore, we trust the…

Natural habitats are a necessity Natural habitats and gardens are vital to our plant’s ecosystem. With the vast development of land throughout our region, wildlife has become displaced. Creating natural habitats in your backyard garden can preserve necessary wildlife to sustain our environmental balance. Ford Elementary School in Acworth, Georgia is one of the premier schools to successful develop a natural habitat and use it to educate students outside the classroom. Ford Elementary School Earth Plant Program Founder and teacher Catherine Padgett says the program’s first goal, “is to bring awareness of environmental issues such as habitats, pollution, and conservation of resources to the classroom by using Ford’s outdoor classrooms.” …
