Flying Biscuit Cafe Had Me Soaring

    March 4, 2016

The Flying Biscuit Cafe is a franchise chain restaurant with 14 locations between Metro Atlanta, North Carolina and Florida.  I stopped to have lunch at the Norcross, Georgia location.  Reminiscent of a diner style atmosphere, The Flying Biscuit offers casual dining with breakfast served all day.  Each location serves up more than 5,000 biscuits per day claims Martin Sprock, CEO of Atlanta based Raving Brands, who owns The Flying Biscuit Cafe name.  Raving Brands is an Atlanta based restaurant conglomerate also managing Moe’s Southwest Grill and Plant Smoothie. Visiting in the early afternoon, I did not expect the bustle of a “dining rush,” however, the restaurant was very busy, beyond…

Top 5: Prepping for Your Herb Garden

    March 2, 2016

Now that it is March, it is time to start thinking about your own herb garden.  First establish which zone you live in for hardy planting….see my previous post http://joannsfoodbites.com/foodie-bites/getting-your-spring-plants-ready/ Most herbs seeds can be planted outside, once the danger of frost has passed.  However, horticultural expert, Doug Johnson says when dealing with herbs, it is more advantageous to plant a seedling in your garden or containers, instead of from seed. Planting from seed will require you to thin out the plant during the season.  Here are his top 5 things to do, right now, to prepare for an herb garden. 5.  GET AN ASSESSMENT OF YOUR SOIL QUALITY.  If…

Celebrate National Pig Day! with EASY Sautéed Pork Chop with Jack Daniel’s Glaze

    March 1, 2016

Today’s pork is leaner (about 1/3 fewer calories) and higher in protein than that consumed just 10 years ago. Pork is a great source of protein:  100 grams of roasted pork top loin contains 26.45 grams of protein. Roasted pork top loin is considerably lower in fat compared to most types of poultry, at 8.82 grams in 100 grams of pork, according to the USDA;  chicken with meat and skin has 13.39 grams. Most pork in the marketplace is CURED – like bacon and ham. Normal precautions should be taken, as with all raw meat. Never taste uncooked pork and thorough wash all kitchen items in contact with raw pork…

    Composting at Home

    February 25, 2016

To decrease our carbon footprint, home cooks should consider home composting. Benefits to home composting include not only reducing your carbon footprint, but also growing a better home vegetable garden.  Composting is the process of controlling the decomposition of organic matter by providing the proper environment for the process to take place. Devices can be purchased to start your composting project, such as this metal container with holes in the top to allow the material to breath during the decomposition process. These are relatively inexpensive, but not necessary.  A good compose pit can be just a loose pile or old pallets stacked in a square.  Just allow 1 cubic yard…

    My TOP 5 Kitchen Tools

    February 24, 2016

These are the TOP 5 work horses in MY kitchen, the tools I cannot live without. Let me know if you agree or list YOUR top 5 kitchen work horses in the comments. #5 – Boos cutting board – this one is 18″x24″x1 1/2″ and sits next to my cook top.  I use it to chop all vegetables and herbs, (I use a plastic cutting board for raw meat).  Treating it monthly with mineral oil, it will last a very, very long time. http://www.johnboos.com/Items_page.asp?s=r&SalesCode=&Prod=1&Page=6&Group=15&hdg=Cherry%20R-Board%201-1/2%22%20Thick%20-%20Reversible%20%20&nsf=False&nsfc=False&csa=False #4 – 2 qt. All-Clad sauce pan – it high sides and durability makes it useful for everything from making sauces to reheating leftovers. All-Clad says…
