    FDA Extends Trans Fats Compliance

    July 5, 2018

In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration required food manufacturers to disclose the amount of Trans Fats in a food product on the Nutrition Facts label, in the hopes of curtailing the use of partially hydrogenated oils, (PHO) in our food supply. Research and health organizations, such as the American Heart Association have proven trans fats raise your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and lower your good (HDL) cholesterol levels, increasing your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Despite the labeling requirement, by 2015, a substantial number of products still contained PHOs. Therefore, the FDA set June 18, 2018, as the deadline for food manufacturers to eliminate PHO’s completely. “the Food and…

    Are You Eating Bioengineered Food?

    May 18, 2018

In the United States, I feel I have a right to know what is in our food supply and how our food is grown. Global food policy research conducted by the Center for Food Safety confirms that 64 countries, including member nations of the European Union, Russia, China, Brazil, Australia, Turkey and South Africa require standards of mandatory GE food labeling. The United States is NOT included on the list of governments providing open, accurate information on the source of foods on grocery shelves. Hence, why I am such a supporter of GMO (genetically modified organisms) labeling. As the spread of commercialized genetically engineered food products increase, the number of…

5 Expected Food Trends for 2018

    January 12, 2018

Being a food blogger, I try to stay up to date on all the industry food trends. Following food writers Marion Nestle and Dianne Jacob, among magazines and blogs, I have found my top five food trends which may influence the grocery and restaurant industries for 2018. 5. Sugar Under Fire Admit it, the United States has an obesity health crisis.  One reason the epidemic seems to get worse each year is sugar consumption. I am not talking about naturally occurring sweeteners found in strawberries and fruit.  I mean artificially manufactured sugars, which processed food manufactures use to add flavor. Our bodies need sugar, which we turn into energy; however,…

    Kicking My Bread Addiction

    August 3, 2017

Remember last week, I was going to change my eating habits.  After revealing my weight frustration to my doctor, he explained cutting out carbohydrates was more beneficial than exercising. Cutting Out Carbs Better Than Exercise? So, I have really been working hard, avoiding potatoes and pasta; which has not been a problem. I have discovered a few things… I HATE steamed cauliflower which has been put through the food processor to replicate mashed potatoes. I have felt more tired this week than normal. There are only so many salads you can eat. But, more urgently…MY BIGGEST BATTLE HAS BEEN… MY BREAD ADDICTION I love sandwiches for lunch.  They are relativity…

    Reducing Carbs Better Than Exercise

    July 27, 2017

Visited my internal medicine doctor last week, for my six month check-up.  Because I have high blood pressure, I like to keep it monitored. I was actually looking forward to the visit because it would be the first time I weighed, since staring my new power walking regime. Unfortunately, I GAINED 3 pounds!  I was devastated! My doctor assured me, walking the 2.6 miles at least 3 times a week was great, but perhaps I had boosted my appetite with my new routine. He said eating carbohydrates would trump any exercise I had endured.  Time for a CARBOHYDRATE CUT BACK. What are carbohydrates? Any food containing refined sugars, starches, fibers…
